Hungarian almás pite is a little different from the apple pies you may be familiar with. A generous layer of lightly sweetened and spiced grated apples is sandwiched between two tender layers of pastry in a shallow pan.
This version uses powdered sugar in the pastry, giving it a particularly tender, fine texture. A layer of finely ground walnuts between the pastry and apples absorbs some of the apple juices while adding a subtle nutty flavour.
Once cooled, the pie cuts into neat squares or rectangles and is traditionally finished with a generous dusting of powdered sugar. This is a great recipe for feeding a crowd!
